Number of Completed Apprenticeship Exams Hits Record Low - North Rhine-Westphalia Sees Historic Low in Completed Apprenticeship Exams

In 2023, North Rhine-Westphalia experienced a notable decrease in final apprenticeship exams completed during dual vocational training. This decline, the lowest since records began in 1976, marks a 3.4% drop from the previous year. Authorities attribute this to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and a rise in early contract terminations among apprentices.

The number of final exams completed in 2023 reached an all-time low, with only 85,800 apprentices sitting for their exams. This decline can be traced back to the sharp decrease in new training contracts signed during the pandemic. Smaller cohorts from that period are now completing their apprenticeships, leading to fewer final exams.

Adding to this challenge, over 37,100 apprentices ended their contracts early in 2024, the highest figure in a decade. This further contributed to the overall decline in final exams completed. Despite these challenges, the pass rate for final apprenticeship exams remained stable at 88% in 2023, consistent with previous years.

The decrease in final apprenticeship exams completed in North Rhine-Westphalia reflects the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and an increase in early contract terminations among apprentices. While the pass rate remained stable, authorities will need to address these trends to ensure the stability and growth of vocational training in the region.
