Nordhorn's Childcare Crisis: 300 Under-3s Awaiting Kindergarten Spots
The city of Nordhorn is facing a childcare shortage, with demand for kindergarten spots outstripping supply. Around 300 children under the age of 3 are waiting for a place, and there are approximately 130 missing spots for older children. The city administration estimates a kindergarten supply rate of around 95 percent, but this is not enough to meet current demand. The city has doubled the number of nursery spots in the last five years, from around 180 to around 360, but the increase has not kept pace with demand. Age-mixing groups caring for younger children further reduce the number of spots available for older children. The city council has approved the construction of a new facility in the Deegfeld area, set to open in January 2019 with three nursery groups and two regular groups. However, this will not entirely solve the shortage. The city administration is working to identify further locations and expansion possibilities for childcare facilities. The DRK-Kreisverband Grafschaft Bentheim e.V. is cooperating with the city to operate and finance kindergartens, providing financial support for expansion in the district. The city of Nordhorn is actively addressing the childcare shortage. The new facility in Deegfeld will provide additional spots, and further expansion plans are underway. However, the shortage remains significant, with around 300 children under the age of 3 and 130 spots missing for older children.
