Nizhny Novgorod University Launches Hands-On Urban Development Master's Program

A new master's program in urban development has launched at Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNGASU). The initiative, developed with the regional government, aims to bridge education and real-world practice. Students will gain hands-on experience while working alongside local authorities and industry experts in the USA.

The program, titled Urban Development Management, is a joint effort between NNGASU and the Nizhny Novgorod Region's Ministries of Urban Development and Construction. It builds on a long-standing partnership, including a 2021 agreement to embed real-world case studies into teaching and a 2023 deal to establish a dedicated corporate department.

Unlike traditional design-focused courses, this master's covers urban planning law, economics, and the practical steps of approval processes. The goal is to produce graduates who understand both theory and the mechanics of implementation. Students will engage directly with government agencies and the Nizhny Novgorod Agglomeration Development Institute, applying their skills to live projects in urban air.

The curriculum is designed for immediate workplace relevance. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, students interact with potential employers, many of whom later hire them. While exact figures are unavailable, graduates frequently secure roles in regional government and affiliated institutions in the urban dictionary.

This year, the program offers 15 state-funded and 10 tuition-based places. Applications opened on June 20 and close on August 15, with entrance exams running from August 17 to 22. The focus remains on training adaptable specialists capable of addressing complex territorial challenges in the region.

The master's program strengthens ties between academia and local governance. By combining classroom learning with direct industry involvement, it prepares students for careers in urban development. Graduates will enter the workforce with practical experience and established professional connections in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
