Nizhny Novgorod students shine in 21st City Christmas Readings contest

The 21st City Christmas Readings competition took place in Nizhny Novgorod during December 2025. Students from various schools gathered to present reports on historical figures, with a focus on Fyodor Ushakov and Dmitry Donskoy. A total of 22 entries were submitted, and eight finalists competed in the last round.

The preliminary round saw ninth- to eleventh-grade students submit 22 entries, with only eight advancing. The final took place at the City Resource Center for Spiritual, Moral, and Civic Education, located at School No. 187. Participants also experienced a virtual tour of a museum space dedicated to Dmitry Donskoy and Fyodor Ushakov.

First-place winners included Andrei Nekhoda from School No. 106, Vasilisa Klyueva from School No. 44, and Vasilisa Petrova from Lyceum No. 165. Petrova secured her victory with a detailed report on Fyodor Ushakov. Runners-up were Sofia Rovnykh, Ilya Shcherbakov, Sofia Pyshnograyeva, Veronika Sharandova, and Anastasia Vdovichenko.

Veronika Sharandova, a tenth-grader at School No. 190, participated and gained valuable public speaking experience. Elena Budlyanskaya, her history teacher, highlighted how the competition helped students form an emotional connection to their topics. Irina Boryakova, head of the city's education department, noted that this year's entries were centred on the historical contributions of Ushakov and Donskoy.

The competition concluded with winners from Schools No. 106, 44, and 165 taking top honours. The event provided students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of history while developing presentation skills. Official sources did not publicly list all winners, but the finalists were recognised for their efforts.
