Nizhny Novgorod sees record student enrolment in 2025/26 academic year
The Nizhny Novgorod Region has witnessed a steady increase in student numbers as the 2025/26 academic year commences. Over 170,000 individuals are now enrolled in higher and vocational education across the region. This year also signifies a milestone for 26,300 first-year students—10.3% more than five years ago.
The region currently hosts 10 public and municipal universities, along with 16 branches of larger institutions. A single private university operates alongside three private branches. Despite this network, no new higher education institution has opened in the last five years.
Competition for state-funded places remains intense. In 2025, 1,163 applicants contended for every 100 budget-funded spots at public and municipal universities. Of the 91,500 students in higher education, just over half are women, and one in two finances their own tuition. Most students (65.3%) pursue full-time studies, while 25.6% learn remotely and 9.1% balance part-time courses. Bachelor’s degrees dominate, accounting for 64.8% of enrolments, followed by specialist degrees (23.3%) and master’s programs (11.9%). Popular fields include economics, education, law, computer science, engineering, and medicine. This year, universities in the region graduated 16,800 specialists, contributing to the local workforce.
The Nizhny Novgorod Region now educates more students than in previous years, with growing demand for both state-funded and paid places. As enrolment rises, the existing institutions continue to shape the region’s academic and professional landscape.
