Nizhny Novgorod ranks third in Russia's 2025 sustainable tourism boom

The Nizhny Novgorod Region has secured third place in Russia's 2025 Sustainable Tourism Development Ranking. The results were announced on January 27 at the Russian Geographical Society's headquarters in Moscow. Officials highlighted the region's progress in balancing economic, environmental, and social priorities within tourism.

The ranking assessed regions using 15 ESG criteria focused on tourism. Nizhny Novgorod shared its third-place position with Kemerovo Oblast, trailing only St. Petersburg and Moscow. Governor Gleb Nikitin stated that the result reflects the region's push for integrated tourism growth.

Over the first ten months of 2025, paid tourism services in Nizhny Novgorod surged by 33%, reaching 24.5 billion rubles. Sergei Yakovlev, the region's Minister of Tourism and Trade, accepted the award on behalf of the local government. The ranking's authors noted that the achievement signals a shift toward sustainable practices in the industry. The national Tourism and Hospitality project aims to expand travel infrastructure and promote domestic tourism. A key goal is to improve Nizhny Novgorod's reputation both nationally and internationally. The initiative also focuses on ensuring safe, high-quality journeys for visitors.

The ranking places Nizhny Novgorod among Russia's top regions for sustainable tourism. Its 33% growth in tourism revenue underscores rising demand for services in the area. The region's efforts align with broader national plans to strengthen travel infrastructure and visitor experiences.
