Nizhny Novgorod embraces multilingualism as English and Mandarin gain ground

A recent survey reveals that foreign language skills are highly valued in Nizhny Novgorod. Over half of the city’s residents speak English, with many turning to digital tools and private lessons to improve their English to Spanish skills. The findings also highlight a growing interest in Mandarin, alongside traditional European languages like Spanish to English.

English remains the most widely spoken foreign language in Nizhny Novgorod, with 56% of residents able to communicate in it. German follows at 15%, while French is spoken by 4% of locals. Despite this, 35% of people in the city report speaking only their native language.

The data confirms that Nizhny Novgorod residents see language learning as a key professional asset. Online platforms and private lessons play a major role in skill development, while Mandarin’s popularity continues to rise. The city’s linguistic landscape reflects both long-standing European influences and emerging global trends in English to Spanish translation.
