Nigeria Launches Free Skills Training to Boost Economic Growth
Nigeria has launched a major skills training initiative to boost economic participation and financial literacy across the country. The programme, led by the Office of the Vice President through the Presidential Committee on Economic & Financial Inclusion (PreCEFI), will offer free training in key sectors to Nigerians—with a focus on women and young people. The initiative forms part of Nigeria's broader financial inclusion strategy. It will cover areas such as digital and IT literacy, financial skills, healthcare, creative arts, business, engineering, and hospitality. To ensure quality, PreCEFI signed a Memorandum of Understanding with six professional bodies, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), and the National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA).
The programme has also gained backing from international partners like the World Bank, the African Union, ECOWAS, and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). Vice President Kashim Shettima highlighted its potential to transform lives not only in Nigeria but globally. Officials have warned that the training remains free, urging citizens to avoid any payment requests. The scheme aligns with President Bola Tinubu's vision of empowering Nigerians with practical skills for economic growth. By improving digital, financial, and entrepreneurial abilities, it aims to create opportunities for marginalised groups and strengthen the nation's workforce.
The free training programme will roll out across multiple sectors, supported by both local and international organisations. Its success could enhance financial literacy, reduce unemployment, and contribute to Nigeria's long-term economic development. Authorities continue to stress that participation requires no payment.
