Mentor - The Reading Helpers Bergisch Gladbach e.V., a non-profit organisation based in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, is seeking committed individuals who enjoy working with children and have patience and good German skills to become reading mentors.

The association, which was founded in January 2025, was initiated by the Bergisch Gladbach city library in 2024. Its goal remains to sustainably promote the reading skills of students. The association's approach is non-pressure, empathetic, and at eye level with the children, creating reading pleasure and building a relationship of trust with the children.

The association's motto is "We want to pick up children where they are." Around 40 volunteer reading mentors are currently active in the association, supporting children once a week for an hour.

To become a reading mentor, interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to the association at [email protected]. The training for new volunteers was initiated in 2024, in close cooperation with MENTOR Rösrath e.V. The training prepares volunteers for the pedagogical task and conveys necessary knowledge for reading promotion.

By becoming a reading mentor, one not only gives knowledge but also self-confidence and future opportunities to children. Schools in Bergisch Gladbach are invited to contact the association for potential cooperation in reading promotion. The association is currently active at a total of nine schools in Bergisch Gladbach and Odenthal.

The volunteer work at MENTOR is supportive and valuable due to further training, accompaniment, and exchange of experiences. If you are interested in volunteering, we recommend reaching out to the association directly for more information about the application process and any required qualifications.

In their role as reading mentors, volunteers at Mentor - The Reading Helpers Bergisch Gladbach e.V. not only enhance children's literacy skills but also foster their self-confidence and future opportunities, making a significant impact in education-and-self-development. For those passionate about lifelong learning, home-and-garden might not be the only realm to explore; becoming a reading mentor could be a fulfilling choice in the home-and-garden sector of personal growth and community service.
