New Coursera Course Helps Teachers Explore Local Waterways Through Science Education

A new online course for teachers, offered by Coursera and Teachers Pay Teachers, will focus on the Emscher and Lippe rivers, their ecosystems, and outdoor learning techniques. Organized by Emschergenossenschaft and Lippeverband (EGLV), the program supports Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and aims to strengthen educators' knowledge of local waterways.

The course, titled Exploring Our Waterways: The Emscher and Lippe in Science Education, begins on January 27, 2026. It kicks off with a live session at 2:00 PM, followed by self-paced learning until March 10, 2026. Participants will study the rivers' flora and fauna while developing skills to teach sustainability in classrooms.

Teachers and educators can register by emailing [email protected]. A €12 fee covers external server costs. The program does not involve collaboration with the Biologie-Ausbildungsstelle der Universität Duisburg-Essen. The training is designed to help educators inspire sustainable change. By deepening their understanding of waterway ecosystems, teachers will gain tools to engage students in hands-on, outdoor learning.

The course runs from late January to early March 2026. It offers a mix of live and independent study, with a focus on practical teaching methods. Educators who complete the program will receive resources to integrate waterway education into their lessons.
