New Book Reveals the Hidden Struggles of Emergency Workers Through Their Own Stories

A new book titled The Person Behind the Uniform is shining a light on the daily violence faced by police officers, paramedics, and firefighters. Through personal stories and portraits, it reveals the human cost behind attacks on emergency workers. The book has already gained attention, with a quarter of its initial print run sold within a month.

The book takes an unusual approach by including QR codes that link to profiles of real emergency personnel. These professionals are willing to visit schools and share their firsthand experiences with students. One school already using the material is Münster’s Albert Schweitzer School, where it forms part of a special-needs programme. Students engage in role-playing exercises based on the book’s content.

At the school, principal Ursula Krawinkel supports the initiative, pointing to rising disrespect and lower frustration tolerance among young people. She believes the book helps address these issues by fostering empathy. Meanwhile, North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) has backed the project, joining a video call with a class to stress the importance of respect for uniformed personnel. The core message of the book centres on the emotional and physical suffering endured by those in uniform. By presenting their stories alongside photographs, it aims to challenge stereotypes and encourage reflection on the consequences of aggression.

Since its release, The Person Behind the Uniform has made an early impact, with 250 copies sold in the first four weeks. Its use in schools suggests growing interest in educating young people about the realities faced by emergency workers. The inclusion of direct engagement through QR codes and classroom discussions further extends its reach beyond the printed page.
