New $1M Initiative Helps Foster Youth Access Higher Education in Canada

A new partnership aims to help more young people from foster or government care access higher education. The Telus Friendly Future Foundation and Belonging Network have launched a 10-year, $1 million initiative to provide financial and practical support. The programme will offer bursaries and additional services to reduce barriers for these students.

The Telus Orca Student Bursary, powered by Belonging Network, will provide over 200 bursaries to youth from care across Canada. This group is currently half as likely to pursue post-secondary education compared to their peers. The partnership builds on the existing Telus Student Bursary programme, which has already supported over 1,600 students in nine provinces since 2023.

The 10-year partnership will roll out in 2026, offering both funding and support services to eligible students. Applications for the bursary will open months before the spring term, with details to be announced. The initiative aims to improve educational outcomes for young people leaving care across Canada.
