Neuwied's bold plan lets children reshape their neighborhoods by 2026

Neuwied is taking steps to become a more child-friendly city by giving young residents a direct say in local decisions. A new project called Check Your Neighborhood will let children and teenagers assess their surroundings and highlight what needs improvement. The initiative builds on the town's existing commitment to children's rights and democratic participation.

The Check Your Neighborhood project will begin in Feldkirchen in 2026. Young people there will examine their neighborhood, noting strengths and problems. Their findings will be recorded on an interactive digital map.

A neighborhood conference will follow, where the Neuwied Youth Council will lead discussions and help set priorities. The project aligns with other local efforts, such as Ask the Mayor sessions, which already encourage youth engagement.

After Feldkirchen, the scheme will expand to other districts every 18 months. The aim is to boost young people's confidence in democracy while making Neuwied more responsive to their needs.

The project will give young residents a structured way to influence their community. Their feedback will shape future improvements in each district. Neuwied's approach reflects its broader goal of embedding children's rights in local governance.
