Nearly 500,000 Students Exit Russian Universities in One Year
Nearly half a million students left Russian universities in the 2024/25 academic year, marking a significant shift in the higher education landscape. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education sees this trend as evidence of rising academic standards and stricter quality requirements in Russia.
The departure of students was not uniform. Around 157,583 left voluntarily, while 147,000 did so for other reasons. Additionally, 1,092 students withdrew due to health issues. This trend has been accompanied by an increase in expulsions for poor academic performance, with 186,000 students affected. The total withdrawal rate reached 10.7% of the 4.6 million enrolled students, translating to one in ten university students in Russia dropping out.
The ministry interprets this trend as a positive sign, indicating that the competitiveness and prestige of the Russian university system are enhancing. However, it is important to note that there are no publicly available data on the total number of students excluded from Russian universities due to poor performance between 2020 and 2025.
The significant number of students leaving Russian universities, coupled with the increase in expulsions for poor performance, suggests a shift in the higher education sector. While the Ministry of Science and Higher Education views this trend positively, indicating improved education quality, the lack of data on expulsions due to poor performance raises questions about the full picture of this trend.
