NCERT Forms Team To Develop AI Textbooks For Classes 11 & 12

India is expanding artificial intelligence education in schools as part of a national push for digital literacy. The government’s latest initiative will introduce AI learning from Class 3 by 2026-27, with new textbooks and training programmes already in development. The move aims to equip students and teachers with essential AI skills from an early age.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is leading efforts to create AI textbooks for Classes 11 and 12. A dedicated team under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been formed to design these materials. This follows the broader SOAR initiative, which focuses on building AI literacy among students from Classes 6 to 12 and their educators.

The SOAR curriculum consists of four progressive modules, each lasting 15 hours. These will be rolled out across different grade levels to ensure structured learning. Meanwhile, NCERT has already integrated AI into vocational education by including a project on **Animation and Games using AI tools** in the Grade 6 textbook. Looking ahead, AI education will extend to even younger students. Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, children in Class 3 will begin learning AI fundamentals. The phased approach reflects the government’s commitment to embedding technology in school curricula nationwide.

The new AI textbooks for senior classes will be ready under CBSE’s supervision, while the SOAR programme continues its rollout. By 2026-27, primary school students will also engage with AI concepts. The changes mark a significant shift in how technology is taught in Indian schools.
