NCERT Forms Team To Develop AI Textbooks For Classes 11 & 12
India is expanding artificial intelligence education in schools through two major initiatives. The government’s SOAR programme will introduce AI literacy for students from Classes 6 to 12. Meanwhile, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is developing dedicated syllabi and textbooks for higher grades.
The SOAR initiative focuses on making AI education accessible across different regions. It includes four progressive modules designed for students in Classes 6 through 12. The goal is to ensure both learners and teachers gain foundational knowledge in artificial intelligence.
NCERT has taken steps to integrate AI into existing curricula. A vocational textbook for Grade 6 now features a project using AI tools for animation and game design. For older students, the organisation has assembled a team to create AI syllabi and textbooks specifically for Classes 11 and 12. Looking ahead, the government plans to extend AI education to even younger pupils. Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, children in Class 3 will begin learning about artificial intelligence.
The combined efforts of SOAR and NCERT aim to build a structured AI learning pathway from primary to secondary education. By 2026, students as young as eight will start engaging with AI concepts. The initiatives seek to prepare a generation familiar with emerging technologies from an early age.
