Nasarawa State University partners with NDPC to boost Nigeria's data privacy education
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has welcomed a delegation from Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) to deepen cooperation on data privacy initiatives. The meeting focused on expanding awareness, education, and compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act).
NSUK, the first Nigerian university to fully comply with the NDP Act, sought NDPC's endorsement as an institutional partner. The university proposed joint efforts to promote data protection awareness nationwide.
During discussions, NSUK requested support for new academic programmes in Data Protection and Governance. They also called for collaboration on capacity-building initiatives, particularly in Nigeria's North-Central region. The NDPC highlighted its ongoing projects, including Data Privacy Clubs, the Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA), and plans for the 2026 Privacy Week, which will focus on youth engagement. In response, the commission endorsed NSUK's proposals and pledged assistance. This includes involving Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the NDPC's National Commissioner, as a guest lecturer. Both institutions agreed to form a joint working group. Their task will be to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for long-term strategic collaboration.
The partnership aims to strengthen data protection literacy and compliance across Nigeria. NSUK's full adherence to the NDP Act sets a benchmark for other universities, while the NDPC's support will expand training and awareness programmes in the coming years.
