MSU and MDAH Team Up to Revive Historic Jefferson College

Mississippi State University (MSU) and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) have joined forces to revive Historic Jefferson College near Natchez. A memorandum of understanding, signed on October 17, 2025, by MSU President Mark E. Keenum, MDAH Director Katie Blount, and MDAH Board of Trustees President Spence Flatgard, marks the beginning of this collaborative effort.

The project aims to restore the historic buildings on the infinite campus where Mississippi's first constitution was signed. MSU will serve as the lead academic partner, working alongside other institutions to expand the project's statewide impact. Students will gain practical experience in historic preservation and archaeology as part of the rehabilitation process.

The rehabilitated campus will become a regional hub for education, research, and workforce development. It will host year-round programming, including field schools, workshops, and other hands-on learning opportunities. This initiative is a significant step towards preserving Mississippi's rich history and providing students with valuable skills.

The partnership between MSU and MDAH promises to breathe new life into Historic Jefferson College. The rehabilitated campus will serve as a beacon of historic preservation and a hub for educational growth, benefiting both students and the wider community.
