More students in Saxony-Anhalt are taking part in subsidised holiday internships in the skilled trades. The number of participants has risen sharply in 2025, with hundreds more signing up compared to last year. The programme, funded by the state, offers financial support to young people exploring career options.
In Magdeburg, 474 students joined the scheme in 2025, up from 335 in 2024. Meanwhile, Halle saw an even bigger increase, with 589 participants this year compared to 429 last year. Thomas Keindorf, president of the Handwerkskammer Halle, confirmed these figures in a statement from Halle/Magdeburg.
The programme pays eligible students aged 15 and older €120 per week. It aims to help them find future training opportunities while gaining practical experience. Many high school students, including a notable number of young women, took part in the internships. The most sought-after fields were automotive trades, electrical work, and sanitation, heating, and air-conditioning technology. These areas attracted the highest interest among participants, reflecting growing demand for hands-on training in skilled professions.
The rise in participation suggests stronger engagement with vocational training in Saxony-Anhalt. The programme continues to provide both financial support and career guidance for students. Officials expect the trend to encourage more young people to consider skilled trades as a future path.
