MIT Corporation appoints fresh board members

In a recent development, several distinguished alumni and leaders have been elected to the MIT Corporation, the institute's highest governing body. The new members bring a diverse range of expertise, from textile manufacturing to property development, and from academia to public service.

Marjorie M.T. Yang '74, Chairman of Esquel Group, a leading Hong Kong-based textile and apparel manufacturer, has been elected to a three-year term as a term member of the MIT Corporation. Yang, who holds an SB from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School, has also served on visiting committees for architecture and mathematics, and on the Campaign Steering Committee.

Philip C. T. Ng '83, CEO of Far East Organization, a family-owned property development and investment group operating in Singapore and Malaysia, has also been elected as a term member of the MIT Corporation. Ng, who holds a BS in civil engineering from King's College, London, and two master's degrees from MIT - one in technology and public policy, and one in city planning - is known for his active involvement in the MIT Alumni Association since 1992 and serving as its president last year.

R. Gregory Turner '74, SM '77, President of Turner Duran Architects, has also been elected as a term member of the MIT Corporation. Turner began his career in architecture with I.M. Pei & Partners and then worked in Philip Johnson's office, both in New York.

Theresa M. Stone '76, who served as MIT's executive vice president and treasurer from 2007 to 2011, has been elected to a two-year term as a term member of the MIT Corporation. Stone is also a member of the California Council on Science and Technology and the Advisory Board of Engineering at MIT, and a trustee of the Foundation at the University of California at Irvine.

Phillip T. Ragon '72, CEO of InterSystems Corporation, a $400-million software company with its corporate headquarters in Cambridge, Mass., and offices in 23 countries, has also been elected as a term member of the MIT Corporation. Ragon is on the Corporation's visiting committees for physics and health sciences and technology.

The new members join the Corporation's ranks alongside other distinguished individuals, including Arunas A. Chesonis '84, CEO and Chairman of Sweetwater Energy Inc., Tanguy Chau SM/PhD '10, MBA '11, Associate at McKinsey & Company and the Founder of Sample6 Technologies, and Mark P. Gorenberg '76, Managing Director of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners.

Fariborz Maseeh ScD '90, Founder and President of The Massiah Foundation, and Founder and Managing Principal of Picoco LLC, has been active in the MIT Alumni Association since 1992 and served as its president last year. Maseeh, who earned a BS from Portland State University, an MS from the University of Texas at Austin, and a ScD from MIT, is a member of the California Council on Science and Technology and the Advisory Board of Engineering at MIT, and a trustee of the Foundation at the University of California at Irvine.

The new members' backgrounds and expertise will undoubtedly contribute to the MIT Corporation's ongoing efforts to shape the institute's future. As Susan Hockfield, the President of MIT and who will step down on July 1, steps down, these new members are poised to play significant roles in the institute's governance.

  14. The diverse backgrounds and expertise of the new members will be instrumental in shaping the future of MIT, especially as Susan Hockfield, the President of MIT, steps down this July.
