Mexico City’s music programme transforms schools with joyful learning
Hundreds of students in Mexico City are preparing for their first holiday recital as part of a growing music education programme. The 'Do, Re, Mi Showcase Concert' will feature children from seven schools in Milpa Alta singing and playing instruments like flutes, guitars, and violins. Behind this initiative stands a city-wide push to bring music into classrooms through play and creativity.
The 'Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol for My School' programme has already reached 500 schools across Mexico City. In its first year under the current administration, it delivered 459 introductory workshops to over 120,000 children aged six to 14. Officials aim to expand the programme by 500 new schools annually.
At Progreso Campesino Elementary School, 10-year-old Michelle has discovered a passion for the violin. Her enthusiasm reflects the programme’s hands-on approach, where instructors like José Alfredo Galván blend music lessons with games and movement. Alberto León Granados, another instructor, notes how music fosters joy and teamwork among the students. Initially, some school directors and teachers questioned the programme’s value. Yet as children began performing and communities saw the benefits, requests for inclusion grew. Ana Francis López Bayghen Patiño, Mexico City’s Secretary of Culture, champions the initiative, arguing that playful music education should be accessible to every child.
The upcoming holiday concert marks a milestone for students who have spent months learning instruments and singing. With plans to double its reach, the programme is set to bring music education to thousands more children in the coming years. Schools that once hesitated now actively seek to join the growing network.
