Meißen's €6.5M EU-funded upgrades transform schools, transport, and sports by 2027

Meißen is set to benefit from a series of development projects funded by the EU and the Free State of Saxony. Between 2021 and 2027, €6.5 million will support eleven initiatives, many of which are already in motion or about to begin. The upgrades will focus on infrastructure, education, and sports facilities across the city.

The Niederfähre/Vorbrücke district is at the heart of the funding push. Work on the S-Bahn station forecourt began in March 2023, aiming to modernise the area for better accessibility. Nearby, Zscheilaer Straße is being redeveloped to improve safety for students attending the Free Waldorf School and Franziskaneum Gymnasium.

In Heiligen Grund, the sports complex is undergoing major changes. The old weightlifting hall will be upgraded by June 2027, with energy-efficient renovations and improved accessibility. A small sports field is also being converted into a new play and activity area, with construction starting in March 2023. Meanwhile, Pestalozzi Secondary School's annex building will receive a renovation and expansion, funded by the ERDF programme.

Local officials from SMIL have expressed satisfaction with the progress so far. The projects, co-financed by Saxony, are part of a broader effort to enhance public spaces and infrastructure in Meißen.

The funding will bring long-term improvements to Meißen's schools, transport links, and recreational areas. With many projects already underway, residents can expect upgraded facilities and safer public spaces by 2027. The initiatives reflect a coordinated push to modernise key parts of the city.
