Malaysia’s ‘Big Eyes’ radar boosts East Sabah’s maritime security with AI surveillance
New security projects in East Sabah have been officially handed over to strengthen surveillance and stability in the region. The 'Big Eyes' and solar hybrid initiatives mark a key step in the second phase of the Eastern Sabah Security Command’s (ESSCom) long-term plan. Both projects were funded by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) under Malaysia’s 2023 renewable energy budget.
The 'Big Eyes' project, completed on November 28, features advanced radar and camera systems for maritime monitoring. Installed on Pulau Ligitan, it reduces reliance on personnel while speeding up responses to security threats and cross-border crime. The system cost RM3.94 million and was financed by KeTSA’s Green Energy Office.
The new security assets on Pulau Ligitan, Pulau Pom Pom, and Pulau Boheyan are now operational. They improve surveillance, reduce human resource demands, and ensure a stable power supply for critical operations. The initiatives form part of a broader strategy to secure the Eastern Sabah Security Zone for the long term.
