Mainz Pubs Raise €10,000 for Kenyan Slum Students via Beer Coasters
A new fundraising drive has launched in Mainz to support children living in Kenya's Korogocho slum. Local pubs and restaurants are joining forces with the nonprofit Smiles Africa e.V. to raise €10,000 for university scholarships. The campaign uses beer coasters with QR codes to encourage donations from customers.
The initiative targets Korogocho, a Nairobi slum where roughly 300,000 people live on less than two dollars a day. Smiles Africa e.V. has worked there since 2016, covering school fees and offering mentoring to help young people escape poverty and crime.
More students than anticipated have now qualified for higher education, creating unexpected financial pressure. To meet this need, the nonprofit has partnered with Mainz businesses to boost funding. Beer coasters printed with QR codes now direct customers to a donation page. Oliver Beck, owner of *Die Kugel* pub, is among those taking part. He cited the organisation's transparency and personal ties as key reasons for his involvement. The campaign also hopes to inspire other local businesses to contribute, proving that even small donations can have a real impact.
The €10,000 target will fund university scholarships for students in Korogocho. Donations can be made via the QR codes on beer coasters in participating venues. The effort highlights how local action in Mainz is directly supporting education opportunities thousands of miles away.
