Maharashtra workshop empowers children to shape village decisions
A two-day workshop on children's rights took place in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar from 5 to 7 March. The event brought together 80 representatives from 50 gram panchayats across 20 districts in Maharashtra. Organised jointly by MSCPCR, YASHADA, and UNICEF, it aimed to strengthen child participation in local decision-making.
The workshop focused on involving children in village planning and addressing their concerns. Sarpanches and officials were directed to set up Bal Panchayats and Bal Meetings, ensuring young voices shape local policies.
Advocate Sanjay Sengar explained how child protection systems work. He also shared insights from Karnataka's Bal Sabha initiatives, highlighting practical ways to include children in governance.
A key outcome was the plan to roll out a Child Rights Module in selected districts. Master trainers, appointed by YASHADA, will lead the implementation in the coming months.
The event marked a step toward formalising children's roles in village decision-making. Gram panchayats now have clear instructions to establish child-focused forums. The module's introduction will further support this effort in chosen districts.
