From School to Fire Department - Now Possible in Magdeburg - Magdeburg Launches Fast-Track Firefighter Training for School Leavers
Magdeburg is introducing a new dual-training scheme for future firefighters this autumn. The initiative enables school leavers to join the city's professional fire service without prior technical qualifications. Officials hope the programme will simplify recruitment and make it more direct.
The three-year course will train ten participants, combining hands-on fire-service work with technical education. Applicants need only a secondary school diploma and must turn 18 by April 1, 2028. Those interested have until February 28, 2026, to apply, with a fitness test forming part of the selection.
To facilitate the scheme, the state interior ministry revised fire-service training and exam rules. This change allows trainees to qualify through a combined practical and academic approach.
By 2026, similar dual-training models will operate at 15–20 fire academies across Germany. Institutions like the Feuerwehrakademie Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, LAV NRW, and Munich's FHWF will offer two- to three-year courses. These programmes integrate theory with real-world training, eliminating the need for prior craft experience.
The new scheme provides a faster route into professional firefighting for school leavers. With a February 2026 application deadline, Magdeburg aims to fill critical roles in its fire service. The model aligns with a growing trend of dual-training options nationwide.
