MacKenzie Scott's $42M Gift Transforms Elizabeth City State University

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has given Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) a record-breaking $42 million donation. The gift marks the largest per-student contribution among her latest round of funding to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has now supported 31 HBCUs since beginning her public giving in 2019.

ECSU Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove, Sr. revealed the donation during the university's Founders Day Convocation on Friday. The funds will help implement ECSU's strategic plan, ASCEND 2030, by creating endowed scholarships, improving academic programmes, and upgrading campus infrastructure.

Scott's approach to giving is known for its flexibility. Her donations are usually unrestricted, allowing institutions like ECSU to decide how best to use the money. This latest gift nearly triples her 2020 contribution of $15 million to the same university. Since 2019, Scott has donated over $26 billion in total, with $7.2 billion given in 2021 alone. Her commitment to education includes last year's $1.1 billion distribution to HBCUs, two-year colleges, tribal schools, and other institutions focused on access for underserved students. In 2019, she signed the Giving Pledge, promising to donate at least half of her wealth—currently estimated at $28.4 billion—during her lifetime.

The $42 million will help ECSU advance its long-term goals while staying true to its 135-year mission. The university now has greater financial freedom to expand scholarships, strengthen academic offerings, and improve facilities. Scott's donation continues her pattern of large-scale, unrestricted support for higher education.
