Landrat Defends Hybrid Service Vehicle with Crisis Scenarios - Luxury Hybrid Car for Commissioner Sparks Climate Change Debate
A debate has erupted over the choice of official car for Stefan Sternberg, the county commissioner of Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Sternberg, a member of the SPD, defends his use of a high-performance hybrid vehicle, citing emergency preparedness. Critics, however, have labelled his reasoning as flawed and contradictory to climate change goals.
The controversy started after questions from the district council’s Green Party and Free Voters faction. They challenged Sternberg’s decision to use a luxury sedan weighing nearly 2.5 metric tons, with 489 horsepower and a top speed of 250 km/h.
The dispute highlights tensions between emergency preparedness and environmental responsibility. Sternberg maintains his vehicle choice is necessary for crisis management, while critics insist it contradicts climate commitments. The debate remains unresolved, with no wider policy clarity from neighbouring districts.
