Lunar Primary Schools Emphasize Climate-Conscious and Safe Commutes for School Trips during European Mobility Week

In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, three pilot cities – Bonn, Aachen, and Münster, along with Jülich and Krefeld – are taking part in the state project "EMW makes school - in your municipality". Among these cities, Lünen is making a significant stride in promoting sustainable and safe school commutes as part of the European Mobility Week (EMW) 2025.

Lünen is one of the pioneers in this statewide initiative, implementing the action "Early practice" at all Lünen primary schools during EMW. From September 16th, 2025, a "temporary school street" will be set up at the Elisabethschule, marking the start of this transformative week.

The focus of "Early practice" is to encourage schoolchildren to cover their daily school journey as climate-friendly as possible. To make the way to school a small adventure, a collection of ideas for games can be downloaded for free via the Zukunftsnetz Mobilität.

In support of Lünen's preparations and follow-up for the EMW, the Zukunftsnetz Mobilität and a creative service provider are extending their assistance. The aim is to foster children's independence and ensure their safe travel, which is both an educational task and a transport policy goal.

Lünen's Mayor, Jürgen Kleine-Frauns, hopes that this example will set a precedent for safety on the school path and children's independence. During the EMW, students will work together with their schools to beautify the way from the bus stop to the school building, using the "Playway" action box, which contains materials such as sidewalk chalk and stencils for animal footprints.

Police, community partnerships, and the ADFC will accompany the introduction of the "temporary school street" on selected days during the Mobility Week. The city of Lünen is participating in the EMW from September 18th, 2025, and aims to share its experiences statewide through exchange formats and documentation of the most important findings from the three pilot municipalities.

NRW Minister of Education Dorothee Feller and NRW Minister of Transport Oliver Krischer have jointly taken over the patronage for the European Mobility Week 2025 in the state, demonstrating their commitment to promoting sustainable and safe school commutes. Lünen's efforts during the EMW are a significant step towards achieving this goal and setting a positive example for other cities to follow.
