The Forest as the Green Classroom - Lower Saxony’s School Forests Grow with New Funding and 1,000 Trees Planted
Lower Saxony's 'School Forests Against Climate Change' project has received a significant boost. With a letter of intent, the initiative has secured funding, ensuring its continuation and expansion. Minister of Agriculture Miriam Staudte lends her support as the project's patron.
The project aims to identify suitable land for new school forests and engage more schools in the initiative. It also seeks political and financial support to make environmental education practical and engaging.
Over 85 school forests already exist in Lower Saxony, with around 80,000 children and adolescents benefiting from these 'green classrooms'. Recently, around 1,000 trees and shrubs were planted in Wendeburg, expanding one of these school forests. The project demonstrates the success of environmental education through hands-on experience, with each school forest including areas reforested by students.
The Niedersächsische Landesforsten (Lower Saxony State Forests) has ensured the continuation of the project, with plans to establish new school forests in the region.
