Lochen mourns 'Wirts-Marie,' the innkeeper who defined a village's heart
Maria Frimmer, affectionately known as 'Wirts-Marie' or 'Landlady Maria,' has passed away at the age of 95 in her lifelong home of Lochen. The beloved innkeeper was a cornerstone of the village, running the Gasthaus Andräa for decades with warmth and dedication. Her death comes just over a year after the loss of her husband, Anton, following a period of declining health in her final months.
Maria Frimmer was born, raised, and worked in the same inn she would later manage. She took over the family business as a child, knowing she would continue the tradition. In 1958, she married Anton Frimmer, and together they raised two children while keeping the Gasthaus Andräa at the heart of village life.
For generations, she was the soul of Lochen, known for her exceptional cooking—especially her legendary venison ragout at the hunters' feast. Guests remembered her for her welcoming nature and genuine care, qualities that made the inn a true community hub. Beyond her hospitality, she quietly supported others, secretly aiding forced labourers during the war and later offering refuge to displaced families. Her later years were filled with joy from her three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Yet, as time passed, the Gasthaus culture in Bavarian villages like Lochen changed. Once central to social life, local inns now face pressures from tourism, modern regulations, and shifting demographics. Many traditional gatherings, like live music and folk dancing, have faded, replaced by commercialised operations and modern amenities.
Maria Frimmer's passing marks the end of an era for Lochen. She spent her entire life in the inn she loved, shaping its legacy and the village's spirit. Her memory will live on through the generations of family and guests who knew her as the heart of Gasthaus Andräa.
