Live stork cam returns to Mainz for the 2026 nesting season
Storks have become a familiar sight in the Mainz region, with around 500 breeding pairs now calling the area home. Many of these birds nest on power poles, creating both a spectacle for locals and a challenge for energy providers. To give people a closer look, Mainzer Netze has once again set up a live webcam for the 2026 nesting season.
The stork population in the region has grown steadily, reaching roughly 500 pairs today. Back in 2020, a total of 1,248 nests were counted along power lines, with hotspots in Mainz-Bingen, Rhein-Lahn-Kreis, and Main-Taunus-Kreis. That same year, 46 nests were recorded directly on power poles, a habit that poses risks to both the birds and electricity supplies.
Storks have long held symbolic meaning. In ancient Rome, they represented loyalty to family and state. Later, European folklore turned them into bringers of good luck and even baby deliverers. Now, modern technology lets people observe them up close.
Mainzer Netze first installed a live score webcam in 2021 to broadcast live footage of nesting storks. The feed proved popular, and it's now back for 2026, mounted on a pole near Laubenheim. Viewers can watch two stork pairs brooding their eggs, which take 30 to 32 days to hatch, and later raising their chicks. The footage streams on YouTube and the Mainzer Netze website.
To keep the birds safe, the company provides alternative nesting platforms. They also use small wind turbines to discourage storks from settling in dangerous spots.
The live stork cam offers a real-time view of nesting behaviour, from incubation to chick-rearing. Mainzer Netze continues to balance public interest with safety measures, ensuring both the birds and the power supply remain protected. The project highlights the region's growing stork population and their enduring appeal.
