Lisbon's Carris Museum Rolls Out a Mobile Classroom on Wheels
Lisbon's Carris Museum is bringing its history to the streets. A new project, Museu da Carris Fora de Portas, will use a restored bus as a mobile educational space. The initiative aims to reach schools and neighbourhoods across the capital with interactive workshops and historical lessons.
The museum, based in Alcântara, has transformed bus number 4233 into a travelling classroom. Inside, students will find educational materials and guidance from cultural mediators. The programme blends facts about Carris' past with hands-on activities designed for children.
Schools and local associations can book sessions through the museum's Educational Service. Each visit costs around €5.50 per student, while teachers attend for free. The project's schedule and reach remain unclear, as no public data exists yet on participation numbers.
Beyond the mobile unit, the museum's collection includes vintage buses like the 837 and 851. These historical vehicles will also appear at events around Lisbon, further connecting the city with its transport heritage.
The Outdoors project expands the museum's role beyond its walls. By turning a bus into a learning lab, Carris offers a new way to explore Lisbon's history. Schools and communities can now request visits, bringing the past directly to their doorsteps.
