Librarians warned: Adapt to AI or risk becoming obsolete

An international conference on AI and librarianship has highlighted the urgent need for professionals to adapt to new technologies. Held under the theme Re-imagining librarianship: Forging the future with AI technologies, the event brought together experts from multiple countries. Education adviser CR Abrar warned that librarians risk becoming obsolete if they fail to embrace artificial intelligence.

The conference explored four key areas: AI's role in modern libraries, emerging opportunities, current challenges, and future readiness. Attendees included researchers and specialists, among them Carla Hayden, former president of the American Library Association from 2003 to 2004.

The event concluded with a clear message: AI competence is no longer optional for librarians. Those who fail to adapt may struggle to remain relevant in an evolving field. The discussions also reinforced the idea that libraries must proactively prepare for technological shifts to stay effective.
