Leipzig Book Fair Hosts Hands-On Comic Creation Workshop

A hands-on comic workshop will take place at this year’s Leipzig Book Fair. Participants will explore the basics of creating their own comics under the guidance of an experienced artist. The session aims to teach essential skills while encouraging creativity and spontaneity.

The workshop will cover key elements of comic design, including page layouts, character creation, and speech bubbles. Attendees will also learn how to incorporate sound effects into their work. Instead of following rigid plans, they will develop short, evolving stories together.

Berlin-based comic artist and educator Michel Esselbrügge will lead the session. He regularly runs workshops for young people and believes great comics often emerge from unexpected ideas. The focus will be on letting characters and plots grow naturally rather than sticking to fixed scripts. Participants will experiment with accidental twists and organic storytelling. The approach encourages them to embrace mistakes and surprises as part of the creative process.

The workshop offers a chance to learn comic fundamentals in a collaborative setting. By the end, attendees will have produced their own short, dynamic stories. The Leipzig Book Fair event highlights how spontaneity can bring comics to life in fresh and unpredictable ways.
