Large sum – over 200 million euros – designated for job training programs
Chamber of Crafts Karlsruhe Announces Major Investments in Training Academies
The Chamber of Crafts Karlsruhe has revealed plans for two significant construction projects, marking the largest single investment in its history. The total investment for these projects is approximately 215 million euros.
The first project, a new training academy in Karlsruhe, is expected to commence construction in spring 2028 and complete two years later. This academy will be built on a greenfield site in Neureut, northwest of Karlsruhe, and will cost 130 million euros. The Chamber of Crafts purchased the 28,000 square meter plot from the city two years ago.
The new training academy in Karlsruhe will be the Chamber's most expensive project to date. The federal government will cover 45 percent and the state of Baden-Württemberg 25 percent of the costs, while the Chamber of Crafts must cover 30 percent itself. Harter + Kanzler & Partner from Freiburg won the architectural competition for the design of the new academy.
The second project involves the construction of a new facility in Geradstetten, which aims to minimize its CO2 footprint by using recycled concrete and materials from the region. The construction industry in Geradstetten is building the new facility while operations continue, posing major challenges. The construction industry of Baden-Württemberg has already received a notice of 21 million euros from Minister of Economic Affairs Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut.
The architectural competition for the Geradstetten project was won by the Vienna office of Schenker Salvi Weber Architects ZT. The training center in Geradstetten is the largest of the association and the largest German educational center for construction machinery.
Off-the-job training, regulated by the Vocational Training Act, has been compulsory for all training companies and trainees in addition to vocational school since 1969. Many educational academies and centers for intercompany training emerged after the 1970s. The aim of off-the-job training is to ensure that trainees from different companies receive the same practical content.
For more detailed and current information about the timeline and budget for these specific construction training academy projects, it is recommended to consult official Baden-Württemberg state government publications, the relevant industry associations (e.g., the Construction Industry Association Baden-Württemberg), or local municipal websites for Karlsruhe and Geradstetten.
