Komi's Bold Education Overhaul Transforms Schools and Teacher Support
The Republic of Komi has made significant strides in modernising its education system under the national project Youth and Children. Recent efforts include school renovations, teacher support programmes, and community-driven initiatives to improve learning environments. A key event in January also highlighted economic priorities for the region's future.
In 2025, 20 schools across nine municipalities in Komi were renovated and reopened, with another 20 upgrades planned for 2026. The buildings now feature a unified corporate design, incorporating traditional Komi ornamental patterns. Capital repairs and equipment procurement are being carried out through competitive bidding to ensure transparency and efficiency.
The region has also focused on equipping schools with modern resources. A total of 183 institutions received specialised classroom equipment for subjects like Fundamentals of Security and Homeland Defense and Vocational Training (Technology). Financial incentives have been introduced for homeroom teachers, student group advisors, and school directors' counsellors to boost morale and retention.
Beyond infrastructure, Komi's educational institutions are participating in the People's Budget and School People's Budget projects. These initiatives fund improvements to school grounds and support educational events. The Zemsky Teacher programme, launched in 2022, has already employed 55 educators in rural and underserved areas.
Earlier this year, the January Readings event brought together government officials, municipal leaders, and federal experts. Organised by Komi Head Rostislav Goldshtein, the forum addressed key economic challenges facing the region.
The ongoing modernisation of Komi's schools reflects a broader commitment to education and community development. With renovated facilities, new equipment, and targeted teacher support, the region aims to strengthen its learning environments. Further upgrades and programmes are set to continue through 2026 and beyond.
