King County funds 672 new affordable homes to ease housing crisis
King County is investing £23.7 million in new affordable homes. The funding will support eight developments across the region, creating 672 homes for low-income families and vulnerable residents. County Executive Girmay Zahilay announced the awards as part of ongoing efforts to tackle the housing crisis.
The latest round of funding will back projects in three key areas. In Seattle, two developments will add 130 affordable rental homes. Meanwhile, four projects in east King County will provide 393 units. Two further schemes in south King County will deliver 149 homes.
The developments focus on those most in need. Priority will go to low-income households, people experiencing homelessness, families with children, and historically marginalised communities. Since 2022, the county's Housing Finance Program has already allocated over £171.6 million to build 3,636 affordable homes.
Officials have previously warned of a growing shortfall in affordable homes. By 2044, the region will require 178,000 more homes, with 166,000 needed for households earning below half the area's median income.
The new funding brings the total number of affordable homes supported by the county since 2022 to over 4,300. These projects will expand housing options for vulnerable groups across Seattle, east King County, and south King County. Construction timelines for the latest developments have not yet been announced.
