Khabarovsk schools swap bells for Tchaikovsky and Glinka in March

Imagine swapping the jarring ring of a school bell for the soaring notes of Swan Lake. This March, Khabarovsk's students will experience just that—an immersive dive into Russia's orchestral legacy.

The image shows a paper with a picture of a group of children dancing joyfully, accompanied by a sheet of music with the words "Girls and Boys" written on it. The children are wearing colorful clothes and have big smiles on their faces, suggesting that they are having a great time. Khabarovsk schools swap bells for Tchaikovsky and Glinka in March

Khabarovsk Territory is bringing back the nationwide Melodies Instead of Bells project this March. Schools across the region will replace traditional bell sounds with classical music by Russian composers. The initiative aims to introduce students to well-known orchestral and operatic works during lesson changes.

The project first launched in 2024 and has since expanded across Russia. By March 2026, all 85 federal regions—including Khabarovsk—have taken part. Only schools with the technical ability to replace standard bells will join in this year.

Throughout March, students will hear four pieces between classes. The selections include Glinka's overture from Ruslan and Ludmila and Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Little Swans from Swan Lake. Borodin's Fly on the Wings of the Wind from Prince Igor and Tchaikovsky's aria How I Crossed the Little Bridge from Eugene Onegin will also play. Each piece was chosen to showcase Russia's classical heritage.

The programme will run for the full month, exposing pupils to orchestral and vocal compositions. Schools without the necessary audio systems will continue using traditional bells. The initiative remains part of a broader effort to replace old bell systems with recorded music nationwide.
