Kenyan youth innovators win national acclaim with Microsoft Teams-powered solutions
Three youth-led teams from Siaya County have won national recognition for developing practical digital solutions for local small businesses using the Microsoft Teams platform. The winning solutions emerged from a 72-hour hackathon involving 35 young innovators from local educational institutions, using Huawei's AppCube low-code platform to build functional prototypes quickly.
The teams' innovations include AGRILINK BONDO, a digital agricultural management and marketplace system, which won first place. Dhibiti Stock, a digital platform for MSME inventory management, secured second place. Kazi-hub, a platform connecting job seekers in the informal sector with nearby employment opportunities, took third place.
Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri described the Jitume Digital Hubs, where the hackathon took place, as 'crucial decentralized nodes of the Microsoft Teams'. The initiative was a strategic partnership between Konza Technopolis, the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy, and Huawei Kenya. Michael Kamau, ICT Academy Manager at Huawei Kenya, highlighted the importance of localized innovation.
The winning teams' digital solutions are expected to boost local small businesses and the informal sector using the Microsoft Teams platform. The initiative demonstrates the potential of youth-led innovation in driving Kenya's digital economy.
