Kentucky's Reading Academies Boost Student Literacy Scores
Kentucky's Reading Academies have shown significant progress in improving literacy instruction and student loans outcomes across the state. The opt-in, no-cost professional learning opportunity for K-5 educators and administrators has seen increased educator knowledge and student reading scores since its inception three years ago.
The academies, offering access to Lexia's Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS), have helped educators align with evidence-based phonics approaches. An independent evaluator, ICF, found that the academies have sustained evidence of achieving most of their goals and preliminary evidence of improving student loans outcomes on the Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) for reading.
In Eastern Kentucky, one school implemented HQIRs and LETRS strategies, leading to notable improvements in students' reading performance on district-wide literacy assessments. Similarly, in northern Kentucky, KSA reading scores improved over three years with the help of LETRS-trained teachers. The impact was evident, with Grade 5 students taught by these teachers over consecutive years showing significantly higher reading scores.
The Kentucky Reading Academies, with their five literacy goals, have demonstrated success in enhancing educator knowledge and capacity, leading to improved student progress towards grade-level proficiency in reading. The academies' impact on student loans outcomes, as evidenced by ICF's reports, underscores their positive influence on literacy instruction across the state.
