Kazakhstan's universities rise in 2026 QS global rankings with record placements

Kazakhstani universities have made significant progress in the 2026 QS World University Rankings. A total of 13 institutions secured 70 positions across various subject and sectoral categories, marking the country's strongest showing yet.

Among them, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University achieved a historic milestone by entering the global top 50 in Education and Training—a first for the region.

The 2026 rankings highlight Kazakhstan's growing presence in global higher education. Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University ranked 41st worldwide in Education and Training, the highest placement ever for a Central Asian institution. Meanwhile, Kurmanagazy Kazakh National Conservatory made its debut in the top 100 for Performing Arts.

L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University appeared in one sectoral ranking and 15 subject categories. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University led the country with entries in four sectoral and 23 subject rankings, the most among Kazakhstani universities. New subject areas also saw representation this year. Kazakh institutions appeared for the first time in Accounting & Finance, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Materials Science. Strong performances were noted in Education and Training, Linguistics, and other established fields. Satbayev University ranked second nationally for the number of new subject entries. Alongside Kazakh National Agrarian Research University and Kurmanagazy Kazakh National Conservatory, these institutions reinforced their positions in specialised disciplines. Kazakhstan remains the only Central Asian country with universities in the global top 100 for subject rankings.

The 2026 rankings confirm Kazakhstan's expanding influence in higher education. With 70 placements across 27 subjects and four sectors, its universities have secured their strongest results to date. The achievements reflect broader improvements in research, teaching, and international recognition.
