Kazakhstan schools switch to remote learning amid respiratory illness surge
Schools in East Kazakhstan and Abai regions are moving to remote learning after a surge in student illnesses. Acute respiratory infections have forced many classrooms to close temporarily. In one case, three-quarters of a class in Semey fell ill, prompting a switch to hybrid lessons.
The Abai region has reported 5,558 ARVI cases among students since the start of the school year. This accounts for 17.2% of all infections in the area, with 25 confirmed influenza cases. Some classes have shifted online after 20% to 30% of pupils became unwell.
The temporary shift to remote learning aims to slow the spread of infections among students. Schools will continue monitoring attendance and illness rates before resuming normal classes. Parents have been asked to follow health guidelines to protect children and staff.
