KAUST Launches AI Institute to Drive Saudi Arabia’s Digital Transformation Under Vision 2030
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has launched an AI Institute, led by Prof. Bernhard Schölkopf as chairman of the joint supervisory board. The Institute, a result of a strategic expansion with Cisco, aims to boost AI research, education, and innovation in Saudi Arabia, aligning with Vision 2030.
The AI Institute, based at KAUST's campus, will be guided by a joint governing board comprising representatives from KAUST and Cisco. Cisco has contributed its latest technology, including a Cisco AI POD, to facilitate AI infrastructure development. This initiative is part of Cisco's Country Digital Acceleration program, which has already delivered 23 high-impact projects in Saudi Arabia since 2016.
The Institute's ambitious agenda includes applied research for AI-native communication systems, Industry 5.0, autonomous mobility, and AI-driven use cases for public-interest sectors. Moreover, it plans to develop local AI talent through free digital upskilling programs, targeting 500,000 learners in Saudi Arabia over five years.
The AI Institute at KAUST, under the leadership of Prof. Bernhard Schölkopf and with Cisco's support, is set to transform AI research, development, and education in Saudi Arabia. By fostering innovation, developing local talent, and supporting Vision 2030, the Institute promises a significant impact on the kingdom's digital future.
