Karnataka’s women empowerment schemes spark economic growth and political debate
The Karnataka government's Gruha Lakshmi and Shakti schemes have significantly improved women's economic status and access to services. These cash transfers and free bus travel have boosted women's workforce participation by 23%. Meanwhile, the government's net market borrowing has increased by ₹37,000 crore, sparking political debate.
The schemes have seen ₹95,450 crore spent in Karnataka so far, with ₹96,000 crore allocated for subsidies since May 2023. Economists praise the initiatives for relieving financial burdens and stimulating local economies. However, there's debate on whether they've compromised development and ignored the urban middle class.
Gruha Lakshmi scheme's funds were primarily used for food (91%), healthcare (85%), education (52%), and loan repayments (27%), directly benefiting households. The Shakti scheme saves women up to ₹1,000 a week, reinvested into household budgets, and empowers women with a sense of dignity and independence.
The government remains committed to social development, stating that fiscal restraint cannot compromise support for vulnerable populations. Despite debate on their impact, these schemes have reduced economic disparities and supported human capital development, with 91% of Gruha Lakshmi funds spent on essential needs.
