Karlsruhe School Wins €30k for Exceptional Democracy Education
The Ernst-Reuter-Community School in Karlsruhe has been recognised for its exceptional work in democracy education, winning the Theme Prize Democracy Education and a cash award of 30,000 euros. The school, which sees itself as a place for all, embracing diversity and inclusion, has previously received the Baden-Württemberg Democracy Prize in 2020 and again in July 2024.
The school, with around 370 students and 40 teachers, was praised for its active democracy education, combining responsibility, participation, and media competence. Students engage in various activities to foster understanding and involvement in democratic processes. They visit senior homes, participate in event organisation, and discuss societal topics in the Red Salon. This holistic approach to learning has not gone unnoticed, with the Elisabeth-von-Thadden-School in Heidelberg and the Community School Gebhard in Konstanz also being finalists in the German School Prize.
Minister of Culture Theresa Schopper congratulated the school, emphasising the crucial role of schools in teaching democracy. The Ernst-Reuter-Community School's commitment to democracy education has been consistently recognised, with its latest award being the Theme Prize Democracy Education. The school continues to inspire and educate its students, fostering a new generation of active citizens.
