Julian Brave NoiseCat's Debut Book 'We Survived the Night' Explores Native Identity and Resilience
Julian Brave NoiseCat, a prominent Native American activist and filmmaker, has released his debut book, We Survived the Night. The book is a deeply personal journey that intertwines NoiseCat's life story with the rich history and culture of his Native ancestors.
NoiseCat dedicated the book to his mother, who, despite being white, was determined to connect him with his Native culture and identity. She played a pivotal role in instilling this connection, even after divorcing NoiseCat's father, a member of the Secwépemc tribe.
NoiseCat's own journey began at St. Joseph's Mission School, one of over 100 missionary boarding schools for Indigenous children mandated by the Canadian government in 1894. He was discovered as an infant in a garbage bin at the school minutes after his birth. His father, who had left the Canim Lake Indian Reserve in British Columbia and moved to the U.S., was not present at the time.
Growing up, NoiseCat became a champion powwow dancer and an activist. He co-directed the Oscar-nominated documentary Sugarcane and moved in with his father to work on the film and his first book, rebuilding their relationship. In We Survived the Night, NoiseCat explores the importance of kinship bonds among Native people and humanity, drawing from his personal experiences and indigenous history.
Julian Brave NoiseCat's We Survived the Night is more than just a memoir; it's a testament to the resilience of Native culture and the power of family bonds. By sharing his story, NoiseCat sheds light on the often-overlooked aspects of Native American history and identity, offering readers a unique perspective on the Native experience.
