Johor's Meh Balik Kampus 2026 eases travel costs for East Malaysia students

The Johor state government has launched the Meh Balik Kampus 2026 initiative to ease financial burdens for students travelling between campuses. For the first time, special flight aid is being offered to those studying in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan, alongside existing free bus services. The RM1.4 million programme aims to support student welfare and strengthen the state's human capital development.

The initiative has been warmly received by students facing high travel costs, particularly during festive seasons like Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Abdul Shahid Abdul Muhaimin, a student at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), called the flight assistance a much-needed relief. With airfare covered, he now has more funds for daily expenses while studying far from home.

Nur Syafiqah Nor Hisam, another UMS student, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that air travel remains one of the biggest financial challenges for students in East Malaysia. The aid helps reduce the strain of long-distance travel, allowing them to focus on their studies. Muhammad Irfan Firdaus Md Fauzi, president of the National Johor Students' Association (GAJ), urged students to take full advantage of the state's support. This includes the RM200 Johor Students Incentive (IMAJ), free bus transport, and the newly introduced flight ticket assistance. While no official figures have been released, the programme is expected to benefit many Johor students studying in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.

The Meh Balik Kampus 2026 initiative marks a significant step in lowering travel barriers for Johor students in East Malaysia. With RM1.4 million allocated, the state government hopes to improve accessibility and reduce financial stress for those studying far from home. Students have already begun using the aid to manage their expenses more effectively.
