Jersey's first student-led TEDx Youth event debuts this month
Jersey's first TEDx Youth event is set to take place at Jersey College for Girls (JCG) this month. Organised entirely by students, the event promises a mix of inspiring talks and personal stories under the theme Unfiltered: Truths That Shape Us. The afternoon will feature 12 speakers exploring topics from social media's impact to the challenges of living with Down's syndrome.
Students from years 8 to 12 have led every aspect of the event, from securing the venue to handling media outreach and TEDx licensing. Their work has included arranging lighting, coordinating with sponsors, and ensuring all technical requirements were met. Natalie Hopkins, Assistant Headteacher and co-organiser, highlighted the team's dedication, calling their maturity and intellectual curiosity exceptional.
The talks will cover a broad range of subjects. Audiences can expect discussions on AI's role in the arts, how hormones affect the female voice during adolescence, and the pressures of body image in the digital age. Each speaker brings a distinct viewpoint, aiming to provoke thought, share experiences, and spark conversations. The event runs from 2pm to 4.30pm at JCG, with all presentations recorded for later release on the official TEDx YouTube channel. Sponsored by PwC, the initiative has also given students hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
The TEDx Youth event marks a milestone for Jersey, showcasing student-driven innovation and diverse storytelling. All talks will be available online after the event, offering a lasting resource for anyone interested in the themes explored. The project reflects both the organisers' ambition and the island's growing engagement with global ideas.
