The Free State of Bavaria has invested €43 million to bring leading academics to its universities. One of the latest high-profile appointments is jazz legend Terri Lyne Carrington. She will now teach at the University of Music and Theatre Munich as a Spitzenprofessorin until 2028.
Carrington's career spans decades as a drummer, composer, producer, and educator. A four-time Grammy winner, she has worked with icons like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter on over 100 recordings. Her accolades include being named an NEA Jazz Master and a Doris Duke Artist, as well as receiving honorary doctorates from York University, Manhattan School of Music, and Berklee.
Before joining Munich's Jazz Institute, she founded and led the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. She also taught at Berklee College of Music for many years. Her latest album, We Insist! 2025, has now earned a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
At the university, Carrington holds a prestigious endowed chair. Her role will strengthen the institution's reputation in jazz education and performance.
Carrington's appointment reinforces Munich's position as a hub for jazz studies. The €43 million initiative aims to attract more world-class professors to Bavaria. Her work at the university will continue until at least 2028.
